Ok troops - I have just bought me a really really really really really really really nice 1996 80 series cruiser (diesel normally aspirated 4.2lt ) and would like to take your advice and give it a new timing belt , filters and oil.

The question is with 290ks on the clock and according to a mechanic friend the motor sounds tight - whatever that means, SO what oil should I be using in her?

I will NOT be using cheap stuff so your valuable input is requested.

I live in Cairns - tropical and intend to venture west across the top and maybe even up the Cape..

Grrr!!!

Oh crap, I only run my baby on Repco diesel oil and change that and filter every 5000, maybe I should be treating her better. :(

I use caltex delo cjx, especially made for small jap diesels. Just make sure your oil has an API rating CD or better like CF.

I believe valveoline super diesel ( as sold buy supercheap) does not have this rating.

I will only use the stuff recommended by the engine manufacturer and that's a J spec oil. Castrol CXJ is the one I use, 5000 for oil and filter. I also only use Toyota or Baldwin filters.

I was told by a mechanic mate of mine that Filters is Filters. He reckoned that the brand doesn't really matter, because they are all made in 2 factories world wide.

If a mechanic said something to that effect I'd be taking the truck to another mechanic, one that knows what they are on about.

It may be true that they are all made in two factories, doesn't mean they are made to the same spec using the same quality material.

Toyota or Baldwin for me.

sorry to hijack this tread, do turbo diesel engines need a different diesel oil? Or can any of the diesel oils do?
