Hi has anyone run there 80 series on used ATF, Hydraulic fluid, Engine oil etc? Is there already a topic on this somewhere? Can i filter used ATF and run it in my 1HD-T? Anyone here done it? Should i mix it 50/50 with diesel or run it 100%? Im thinking of fitting the 50L sub tank (my jap import didnt come with one) and using one tank for the ATF and one for normal diesel. Any ideas or feedback is most welcome. Thanks.

You must have a decent supply of old oil available to use? Oil will burn in a diesel engine, after all the diesel was originally designed to run on peanut oil. However over the years since its invention the diesel engine has been refined somewhat.

I dont belive running 100% oil will be a good idea for several reasons. I think you may get a bit of smoke from the exhuast with oil doing all the burning. Secondly I think the injector pump and injectors will struggle with the viscocity of oil as its viscosity is significantly higher than diesel. Diesel viscosity is typically 2.0 to 4.5 cSt @ 40°C and to get a 0W-20 engine oil to roughly the same viscosity you'd need it at 100°C so you can see how the injection system would struggle on that level alone. ATF I think is around 40 cSt @ 40°C

If you where to regually use used oil I'd be filtering it first with at least a 5 micron filter - toyota fuel filters only typically go to 10micron I belive (not including common rail diesel). If you where to use it I would do around a 25% oil/diesel mix.

I wouldnt recommend doing it on a modern common rail diesel due to several reason. Cleanliness being the first as modern diesel run very high fuel pressures which means very tight clearances in the injection system, and secondly they have all sorts of exhaust filters and pollution control that may be damaged by runing a fuel that they are not designed to take. But on our older style systems it wont hurt as long as its clean and you dont try and use something thats too thick.

I've personally run engine oil though my 1HZ when Im out bush and need to do an oil change - beats carting old oil around with me. I just split the 10L of oil between 2 20L jerrys that I took 5Ls out of and gave it a good mix up and poured it into the tank. Ran no dramas
