Hi folks,

I've discovered a small leak in my gearbox, it seems to be coming from the upper region on the drivers side. The filler side is dry. I whipped off the filler bolt to check the level and about 200ml of oil came out, is this perhaps an indication of overfilling (how is that possible anyhow?)

I'm getting about 1 drop per day with it. Just cleaned it all up today and will see what happens with the reduced amount of oil.

Any suggestions?

No sign of dripping since I degreased and renewed oil (to the right level)

Dont know about 80s but 60s and 40s had a problem of the transfere "pumping" oil from the transfere to the gearbox when the internal seal crapped itself. This may explain the overfilling or it was just filled last time with the car on a slope.

"If" it was the pumping thing there is a kit that replaces the filler plugs with a tube between them, So when the gearbox fills, it drains down the tube back to the tranny.

In the 80 series there is no commonality to allow transfer of oil between the gearbox and transfer. It is impossible.

cheers

This is true - the void between the transfer and gearbox has a drain hole so any leaks from the gearbox output and transfer input drain straight out

Also if you need to replace either of these seals, make sure to get viton lip seals - normal seals just dont last - found that out the hard way pulling the transfer out 3x to change the input seal
