What would you replace it with.
I'm talking real world descisions here not fantasy ones.
If you decided it was time to move to another wagon what would you get and why?

Wash your mouth out. A new same sized 4WD is out of the question for this pensioner, besides what else would fill the many rolls of the 80, caravan towing, rugged, big payload, 7 seater, room for extra battery and fridge? The thought of having to incorporate all the mods onto another vehicle presents a big hurdle. No, I think this one will see me out.

Say you had a budget of 65k. And could still buy an 80 series new for that. Now compare that to everything else in the price range. What would you choose?

That was my decission. Figured to completely rebuild an 80 it would cost that much. But the bonus is I get to customise everything, beef up and make bullet proof along the way. Increase the power, ride and capabilities. = No contest.

We've thought about this recently. Our main motivation is due to needing to seat 3 kids in the back in the future, just for safety we are not totally happy with just the lap seat belt in the middle position. Of course we could use the 3rd row dickie seat as that has a lap sash belt, but cargo area is lost. So looking at replacments theres only 4 options that I can see,
 Toyota 76 series (4 door troopy), but its too small and still has a lap centre belt so its out
 pootrol - but I dont think one could go Datto after toyota
 Landrover Defender, but no child seat anchor points as standard - but at least the new ones have a lap sash centre belt. And they do have plenty of cargo space
 100 series, IFS is a bummer, but really its propably the most logical choice, good engine, good interior space, reliability, has a lap sash seat belt :) Only bitch about them is the purchase price, good ones are still up there and you could buy a brand new defender or pootrol for a few grand more.

I'd go back to a Pajero, latest model, turbo diesel, auto.
I mainly tour and they do that perfectly

I was thinking about doing up my 80s T/D with part time conversion, diff locks, front and rear bars ect but I thought about it and would rather do it to something newer and lower Kms and the 105s is all most my choice but no turbo what were they thinking??,but then the 100s T/D and its IFS is all most it as well as I do alot more on road then off.Even though the 100 T/D is more $ up front in the long run it looks the easiest for my purchase and resale when time comes.

Can't think of anything i'd have instead of an 80, i reckon what thebigboy or Brad.S is doing would be great. In saying that though, a T/D 100 would be nice for touring and a 80 ute like crankys for play. That would be a sweet collection! I'm all for having cars for specific uses not trying to mod one to do everything, its all about the $$$$$ though.

Cheers

Rob

Some interesting points for sure. If I had 3 kids I'd be thinking exactly the same as Shane. Safety would be a prime concern with regard to the belts. I doubt I'll see more than 2 kids though
I'm just going through a lot of thought for future scenarios at the moment. some of the things I have happening now are going to see me tied up in the cash department for a number of years and this will mean the 80 stays for a long time, unless I consolidated other things we own I'd end up with a shade more money for another fourby in say the 40k region but I think the "other" options are slim at that point. just thinking that next year my 80 will be 20 years old..is it worth getting something a little more modern now or just keep maintaining and improving on a steady course..?? Its pretty good now I suppose if not a little outdated my modern standards

Maybe my 80 might end up better at 30 than it is at 20 ??

The fact is its an old truck. And things will wear and go wrong. I could have a 200 series for the money I spend on my truck. And if I had a family I too would go the newer truck, for piece of mind and reliability. Just jump in it and drive it. I wouldnt recomend to anyone buying a 80 series if thats all the money they had, and didnt budget for up keep. And some of it is very very costly. I just had a brake problem a few weeks ago. Cost me 3k.

i aggree with this. just got one for my missus, diesel engine is excellent, bulk power, comfy and big inside with a middle lap sash belt, economy is great, and touring is just fantastic. but you do loose some offroad capability....but meh. i think its a great car.

100s ifs is also a fantastic touring car, big spaceous, great engines, and will go bit better offroad then the paj, due to live axle rear.

if a bigger budget allows id definetly get a 200s cruiser. my old man has had one for a few years, and its a joy! in fact he and the rest of us love it so much he just bought a second one in a sahara to park up next to it. but your talking a lot of money in that way.

as much as i loved my 80, it is an old car, and such will always be an old car, dated and whatever. hence y i moved onto a much newer car, there was compromise, but more modern car was just something we had to do.

in the end the choice is entirely yours, go out have a drive and a feel for all the cars in choice!

davo

I got no issues running an older car in general. In my way of thinking, repayments and basic servicing dont work out too much different than maintaining an older vehicle - you save on the repayments but make up for it on extra maintaince costs. But I'd rather have an older 4WD as in the end your not going to cry when you scratch the paint or dent a panel (or whatever else comes up off road).

yep good point. I need to kick myself every once and a while. I have been afflicted with the "having to have the best" syndrome. My last fourby was a brand spanking new one I bought straight off the showroom floor. 1000 kays later it was scratched from arsehole to breakfast, 40,000kay later it met with an untimely demise.
I then bought a town car with all the latest safety bits and bobs and leather, power everything and all that nice stuff like the ability to accelerate rapidly and that became the wife car. Then i bought the 80. I own it, it costs me fuel and servicing (way cheaper than the repayments on my last one) and it doesnt do anything wrong. the job it was meant to do it does it very well. sometimes I get a bit spoilt and want for the newer luxuries my other car has. but if I updated the 80 then I would have too much money wrapped up in vehicles.way too much. So I need to shut the hell up and stop wrecking my own thread with rubbish.

That said, interesting to hear which way you guys would go if you had to change, but I think en-mass everyone is happy with their choice of offroader 8)
