Here's a post that has been over 12 months in the making and one that will bring a rye smile to Glenn's face.

This morning I left home with a 1HZ under the bonnet, this after noon I arrived home with a 1HD-T under the bonnet.

If you've ever thought about an engine upgrade for your 1HZ this is it, I can't beleive the power.

Glenn, she runs real sweeeeeeeeet mate. :D

There a sweet engine aren't they, Glenn was instrumental in me deciding to go with the 1HD-FT as well and I must admit that it was a damm good decision. Just wait till you see how good on fuel it is given it goes almost as good as a petrol cruiser.

Welcome to the club but not too much Kudos for Glenn he will start asking for a spotters fee.

Barry

No pics sorry, but I can take some of the 1HD-T installed. :D

I must also thank Glenn (again) for the 1HD-T radiator and fuel filter that he kindly donated, they have/will be put to great use. Just on that, the 1HD-T is running fine using only the 1HZ fuel lines and filter (CAV) assy.

I stripped the front end of the truck on the weekend removing everything I could but still leaving it drivable.

This morning drove it to a mates 4WD work shop. Together we finished stripping the front end including the radiator, both batteries and boxes, the bonnet, etc. Then we disconnected everything attached to the engine. The air box came out, the a/c unit got pulled to the side, the started was left connected but removed and pushed to the side, the exhaust (and on mine the extractors).

Once everything was disconnected we hoisted the car up and lowered the gear box, this gave access to the bolts at the back of the engine holding the gear box to the engine. My mate had all the right tools to make this job very easy, it also helped that he's removed and installed hundreds of these engines in the past and knew all the tricks.

Once everything was disconnected the engine crane and a little shaking saw the engine freed from the gear box and removed. Essentially the 1HD-T went back in and together in the reverse sequence.

I had replaced the clutch 12 months ago with a Terrain Tamed heavy duty clutch so that went onto the 1HD-T, I purchased the top hat for the air box ($85) and new air, oil and fuel filters. Apart from a few jubilee clamps and some O rings that was all that was required. Having the old engine there was good as we could swap over any parts that were needed.

Seriously, if I were to do it again I'd do exactly the same again. Might cost me $700 but it's piece of mind and use of the specialist tools and knowledge that can't be beaten.

Hey Guys,

Sorry I haven't been on much lately, Pete so great to see that you got it in, bloody awesome. Hope your loving it.

They go amazing hey? the difference for you must be staggering.

Not surprised to hear that she runs sweet, it did from the second I fixed its bloody 24v starter when it was rolled of the truck here, sounded perfect and started and ran just like mine, which only had 130K on it.

So glad to hear it went smoothly for you mate. One thing though, didn't I send you the top hat section of the air filter housing??? I swear I did.... Maybe I lost it off the trailer on the way down  wouldn't be the only thing

Lost 2 Jerrys full of fuel somewhere, and nearly ran out on the way back too.... so close..... I pushed the poor XR for a 100 clicks with the light on towing a full trailer.... scary scary stuff.

To everyone that got parts of my 2 VX's I hope it went well for all of you and that whatever parts you have serve you well and where possible you get many years of enjoyment from them.

Cheers Glenn

Great work Pete, am starting the same project on my 1990 80 series , where did you get the new 1HD-FT?, I have so far only found one in QLD

I also understand the fly wheel needs a bit of machining to fit ?

Cheers Steve.

Is this seriously a simple bolt up job? I have been searching for theads with specific details but cannot find any, here or on LCOOL so maybe it is. After a month in the desert the 1HZ is blowing smoke...

Mine is a 95, so the FT was a factory option but surely it can't be that easy. Brisbane Motor Imports have some FT's for $11k with under 200'000kms on them. My mechanic quoted me $10k to rebuild my 1HZ! No chance.

It really is that easy. Buy a Beaudesert 3 inch exhaust, and that's about it. I have done a few swaps and every time it's taken no more than a day. Very easy to do. Have also put 1hdt into a troopy and took one day and just as easy. Might want to upgrade radiator but I always kept the 1hz one and it had no problems keeping 1hdt cool.

I've seen those ads on EBay, but I just can't get my head around paying $11k for a "low km" FT. I'm assuming because there's so few around they command a bit of a premium, and in the back of my mind I've always been a bit concerned about what I'd do if my FT crapped itself one day...

Surely it would be much easier sourcing a FTE (and you'd have to imagine parts will be much more plentiful due to the sheer numbers produced as well), and either converting it back to an FT (which I'm pretty sure I read somewhere can be done), or maybe just biting the bullet and wiring up the FTE as is with one of those ready made looms.

I'd love to have a spare engine in the garage I can slowly rebuild over time, but that's just not realistic at these prices...

Brisbane motor imports have FTE's too. I forget the exact price, but I think they were $14k. I'm not too fussed on the electronic side of them, surely isn't much of an improvement and in my book not worth the extra costs. Doesn't Thrash lux do a plug and play loom for $600? I might be old school, but I prefer as little electricery as possible.

We'll if it is just a bolt in, it's just became the most lilkely solution... getting an old 1hz, replacing the smokey one, buying another 80, moving all the accessories over, selling the old one is one hell of a lot of work!
