I think most are a bit scared to put them on in case they let go, what's that saying, the cheap becomes expensive, they might be OK but if something is 1/3 the price it should be how do you know if the original is just overpriced or if the aftermarket is just crap.

Given the cost of a turbo failure I doubt many would be game to risk it.

Barry

A mate put one of the turbos you describe on his multivalve. Travelled a 1000kms when it blew up, lucky that motor has the heater mesh in the intake otherwise there would have been a greater problem.
I have seen 1 mounted on a hilux for 12 months so far so good. Maybe its luck of the draw but I'm not one to take a gamble.

I'm in two minds about this, I am reasonably handy with the tools as well but I really think these are best left to a reputable rebuilder, if you get it wrong and a wheel lets go it's gonna be the most expensive turbo ever, never know might be straightforward, never done one before.

Sometimes the point needs to be blunt for people to see it. The same people who fit cheap n nasty parts where extreme quality is of the utmost importance.

There's a reason brand name turbos cost what they do - and their build quality and ultimate reliability is a major contributor. Why risk a $7000 engine rebuild for the sake an extra few hundred dollars and peace of mind on a quality turbo?

And its amazing it pulls like a train and the build quality looks real good and for only $800 I won't complain

Depends...if you buy a cartridge, you just have to fit the housings, then again the housings still have to be matched to the impeller sizes, the line up of the housings is critical but not the thing that needs any special tooling.

I rebuilt the turbo on my N12 Volvo truck just bought a rebuild kit after measuring all my old parts and used V blocks and a dial guage and then borrowed a torque guage from a automatic trans rebuilder because it needed to be torqued up to some low spec and thats near ten years ago.

No problem I was also a bit cautious of the brand myself and coming off eBay but a lot of other forums have got a couple of guys that have had them for over 50000 km on supra's skyline's and all those buzz boxes with no problems so thought why not.

$800 for a full kit? Where did you buy it from?
