What happens when you press the sub tank button, does the light come on, not come on, come on and stay one or come on and go out after a few seconds.

I had the same issue...turn the ignition on, in a quiet place (usually the garage) and hit the sub button. You will here the solenoids click, do it a couple of times to be sure.
I had no click, so I crawled under with a test light and undid the connectors, to discover no power at the solenoids. There was power at the switch, so I checked for a fuse. There is none.
Following the wiring back to a connector block under the sill below the passengers rear door, I discovered two wires hanging out of the block. One of these was power to the solenoids. I repaired the wiring and then taped the connector block way up out of harms way.
I did check with toyota on the price on a main solenoid (return takes smaller size hose) was around $350 plus tax. Glad I investigated befoe I invested.

Hope this helps

I found out my sub wasn't working by running out of diesel on the Hume highway on a Sunday nite...............

I had a similar problem with those subtank wires near the sill on the back left side, my problem was they had been hit by a stray rock and the wire had been severed, just had to rejoin the wire and wrapped it up in a lot of electrical tape, had no problems since.

I was up in Newcastle today to inspect my 80. There are no lights on the subtank switch nor could I here any clicks.

I had a look underneath and couldn't notice any severed wires although thats not to say there isnt.Is there any where in particular I should check underneath? Enclosed a photo for reference.Image

Hi All,
I have an issue with both the solenoids and after seeing the price quoted above $350 I was hoping someone might be able to help.
Driving on the weekend a stick smashed the plug for the fuel tanks and lost main fuel gauge...easy fix, another stick later on the weekend went up and broke the T piece on one solenoid that comes from the sub tank, at the same time it broke the other T piece on the second solenoid that is the fuel return from the fuel pump.
Luckily a mate was following and started to smell fuel, I only smelt it when I stopped to take a pic...

Can you buy the T pieces separately or do you have to buy the whole solenoid assembly?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Cheers Dave

Don't know if you can buy the tees seperately, find the part numbers here,
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/
go to the parts reference section, fill in your VIN and get part numbers and call Toyota for prices.
