Hello guys,

I have been having troble with my 96 80 series dx std land cruiser.

My problem is when i am shifting down from 3rd gear to 2nd gear. It is very hard to put it in or sometimes it would not go in unless i would completely stop my vehicle then you can put it in 1st or second gear.

I had done putting in castrol vmx fluid in my transfer case at it does not solve the problem.

I was wondering is there a problem in my synchronizer? or some thing else?

Some times when using my vehicle i have to run on 3rd gear if i can not have the chance to completely stop my vehicle, especially on traffic.

Other gears i have no problem, its just that down shifting from 3rd to 2nd.

Cheers,

Lui

I had almost the same problem with mine (it always went in but was very clunky and difficult), and I put Castrol VMX in the gearbox and it went away - took a while but it eventually got there. You said you put it in the transfer case - hope you meant gearbox as the transfer case wont help with changing through the gears!

Mobil 'Agri Fluid 424' has fixed my gearbox problem, actually found it better than Castrol. Almost like new.

Cheers

I have heard of people having great success with this oil. How do you find the gearbox when warm, no hot rattle or gear chatter?

No gear chatter or rattle, from personal experience i would say it would be the better oil of the two. I work for Datto, and we had the same issue with Pootrols, since we started using Agri 424 we have never had a problem since. I strongly recommend you try out. I gave Damo (DGS4WD) a drive of mine the other day and he has owned his 80 for years and has been running Castrol, he is very impressed with how the Agri fluid performs in the 80 gearbox, and will be trying it out in his box as soon as his car is back on the road :) We'll let you know how it all goes!

Cheers
Luke

Sounds good. I have heard a few people say that it has cured the difficult morning shifts. Can it be purchased anywhere?

Sounds promising- I use VMX-M too which is 1000 times better than whatever was in it when I bought the car, but still have the morning downshift troubles until the car warms up...

learn to double clutch also, even if you dont master it it helps to try to match the engine speed to the gear you are selecting. It is possible to drive an 80series without using the clutch at all for gear shifts. Most people shift gears to quickly. The 80s gearbox has larger, heavier rotating parts than your average shopping trolley, they need to be driven accordingly

Hi Guys,

I am having similar trouble and will give the 424 a go.

Do you know if it can be used in the transfer case as well? Thought I might do them both while under there.

Cheers

Steve
