Cruiser Model: Looking For an 80
Year: 95
Hello all,

I am an 80s virgin who is interested in having a proper 4x4 for purposes of extended trips, around a couple of weeks.

Previous offroad experience has involved wrecking land rovers: hoping for better luck and owning experience with an 80

I have been in Australia for about 3 weeks at the mo, having emigrated from Scotland (no, not Pomland, the UK or Europe.....Scotland!!)

Why an 80? Recommendation after recommendation is that the 80 is the dog's.....so I have joined to learn a lot more before taking the plunge....

Right now, we are in process of setting up hime in Adelaide (loving the sunsets, people and wine!!)

Things I am interested in: how to buy a good one (diesel preferred), what an excellent set-up looks like for a bit of bush-bashing, plus beach travelling (some of the good dive and shore fishing sites are a loooong way up the beach...!) and tips, hints and clubs.

Cheers all,

Pies (named after my eating habits, not the team.....) :D

G'day Pies,
Welcome to the forum. I think we should be able to point you in the right direction. You can't go wrong with an 80 series.
Cheer Alby

Can't help you out with hints in the area you are in and there are many more experienced people here who can put you on the right track for the correct setup for your driving but I can advise you on some things

Get a Diesel
Get a 1HD-FT
Get any colour as long as it's white

Unfortunately all the good 1HD-FT's are usually not sold because the people like them too much and wont part with them, if you do find a good one you will pay a premium for it, I was pretty lucky with mine but I have not seen a 1HD-FT for sale since I got this one so you may need to look for a 1HD-T instead.

If you end up going for a turbo diesel I would recommend you get a factory turbo, I am not saying anything is wrong with aftermarket turboing, just that an engine designed and fitted with a turbo by Toyota has had all of the T's crossed and the I's dotted. (Hope that dont start a war)

Welcome to the sight, when you get a cruiser don't forget the golden rule for the site

White it shall be, what is a 1HD-FT? And it's haggis, which needs to be drank with whisky......as I get older I suspect the prostate will require me to wear pants under the kilt and maybe this thread should read "I lost my virginity in the 80s......!" As for Adelaide.........gateway to the outback!!! Just out the back......! And Billy Connolly would love it here......

Multi valve (24 valve) turbo diesel - definatly the pick of engines in the 80 series, come out from 95 I think. Before that the factory turbo diesel was a 1hd-t, which is just a 12 valve engine and looks like a 1hz from the outside

Expensive, hard to find. Only problem with them is that if you need parts you will probably have to go new, cant say I have ever seen one being wrecked, whereas the 1HD-T is basically the same as all diesel cruiser engines so parts are much easier to find and cheaper. The 1HD-T also has bigend issues but replacing them every 100K seems to be the cure. I don't believe the 1HD-FT suffer the same problem(Anyone want to verify that)

At the end of the day it will come down to budget because a petrol will cost you <$10K T-diesel <$20K and 1HD-FT >$20K(all prices being based on no mods). When you do go looking make sure you revs check it even if it's a dealer, lots of turds selling write off's out there.
