How are they coping with stones being flicked up from the tyres, any signs of damage to the LEDS?

An idea for protection for them you could run them through some clear plastic tubing like those led strip lights, it would make it a bit bulkier but that would protect your led's + wiring of course you would need another way to secure it under the slider double sided tape silastic maybe, just another idea for thought.

Hey there Gibbo, thanx for the info. I just put these under my rig, Bloody brilliant. I put one strip down each side. I already had single LEDs under each side but didn't put out the light I was looking for. So I just ripped them out and used the existing wiring set up for the new ones. I have also put double LEDs inside the wheel arches to shine down onto the tyre and surrounding areas. The effect is great. I will be putting a few under the bullbar and a couple at the rear in the near future. Will post some pics when am all finished. Once again thanx for the info.

Cheers buddy! I am half way to wiring some up under the bullbar myself. This is to light up the area directly in front of the tyres. I love the idea of LEDs inside the wheel arches. What did you use to attach them? I can't wait for the pics!!

Stuck along the very top of the windscreen, they make great interior

Now I've seen this, I'll be another one copying. Also plan to get a set for
under the front edge of the bonnet, aiming back into the engine
bay when the bonnet is up, a full strip of them should make for
less shadows when I am hanging over the bulbar, than my current
hanging work light.
Thanks for the idea.

Awesome ideas! Looking forward to the pics!

Hey Shane. I am pleased to report not a single LED has died on the way to the supermarket - jk

Seriously - ZERO DAMAGE so far. I'm very impressed. After some mud runs, they aren't quite as bright as they were originally (maybe I need to put more effort into cleaning up afterwards!) - but I was hoping for this - as I feel they were tad too bright to start with.

My only hassle has been that a couple have come unstuck using the 3M tape that came with the LEDs - although this was expected. I have just been replacing each strip with stronger, fatter double sided tape each time one comes loose.

Has anyone else experimented with another other methods? Adhesives perhaps?

Hey glennyboy! You may have picked up that I was feeling fairly green and nervous starting a thread in 'Tech Write Ups'. To be honest, when I first wrote this up it barely got any attention or replies. I am more than happy to go through it and add more details and photos.

In the meantime and in brief:
I ran some wire from the full time battery terminal in the 'power outlet' box on the drivers side under the hood (disconnect your battery when playing in this area.) I ran the wire through the firewall, then under the carpet to the centre console. I bought a switch (pictured) that I put into the centre console, replacing one of the coin holders (a tiny bit of filing was required here). I ran another wire back through the same path, through the firewall where it split into two wires (soldering) and ran across to either side of the engine bay (using cable ties). The wires then drop down inside the guard and pop out near the mud flap. From here I soldered the wires onto the LED wiring.

The switch then turns them on and off.

There may be 'better' ways of doing this using relays, etc. But I don't have much experience with them, and this seemed to be simple and effective. Anyone who knows more about relay wiring, please jump in and advise.

Please get back to me if you would like to take me up on my offer for more details and photos on the original post.

Cool! As I just said to Shane, I have had no damage so far. I do like the idea of protecting the wiring - I have been trying to think of a way to do this for a while.

does the clear coating that covers the PCB also cover the LEDS, or do they sit out of it?

Let me start by stating that I like the idea. I was thinking a bit of a twist and instead of mounting the lights under the steps would you think that it would be just as effective if mounted more on the side of the chassis rails?

I was kinda hoping that it would almost light the ground on the opposite side of the Cruiser and if for some reason you needed to climb under the truck at night it might offer you some additional light (if it’s a F’ed idea then I a willing to hear it).

In terms of adhesives you could always use the nasty sic-a-flex type products.
Cheers.

They sit out from the clear coating.

I like the idea of them doubling as a work light under the truck. My concern with this idea is that they may not have enough brightness to cut the distance - but this is something that only experimenting would answer. Please let us know how you go! Pics too?

I have done this with only 1 pack and very happy with it (4 at the front and 3 down each side) just gives off enough light
with the 3 down the side I have two facing the ground (just after the front wheel and just before the back wheel) the one in the center is facing parallel to the ground lighting the drive train etc, the 4 at the front on the bull bar are facing parallel to the ground, it gives off enough light ATM but am looking at getting another pack to add more to the front facing down in front of the wheels

heres a few pics

while I was at it I thought I would do the inside with the blue leds, used 6 in total (1 in the front footwell, 1 low on the B pillar, 1 at the rear just under where the 3rd row seat beat goes, IMO way to bright :o

Image

thanks for the idea gibbo

Cheers

Shaun

Just a few pics of what I have done so far. Mine are actually attached to the body just under the sill, perfect fit. The ones in the wheel arches are attached to flat cut to size strips of alluminium. More to come...... The misses thinks I am mad when she asked me how many lights I have put on, in, under and around the rig, but I don't care. The more the merrier I say. He he he....
