Hey all, finally upgraded to an 80 after a bunch of other toyota 4by's, but only could find a standard with what I wanted in the time I had. Later realised how ridiculous their dash is, and was wondering if anyone else out there has hooked up some extra guages all tidy-like? Am thinking I need a tacho (as-if there isn't one!), and maybe egt for the aftermarket turbo. Probably some info on the batteries and the oil pressure too would be handy. Any photos of neat aftermarket guages? Cheers heaps for any ideas.

You could be the first on here to try one of these,
www.nata.net.au
You'd just need a tacho then

Welcome to the site.

Unless your Injector Pump has recently been rebuilt or you are about too it will be missing the tacho sensor. The wiring loom is behind the instrument cluster ready for change over but as you can imagine this is quite a PITA to do it properly. I have heard of people using VDO tachos run off the alternator.

Personally I believe this is the easiest and cheapest aftermarket option there is for fitting a (digital) tacho and is what I will be fitting soon.

Although I have added some GXL features like Electric Mirrors, Auto Aerial, Centre Console which houses the ARB compressor and winch controls etc. Some things which may take your fancy is the VDO volt gauge, boost gauge, Auber1812 Pyro Gauge (ebay) - Digital Engine Temp Watchdog TM2 - (frank off here sells these, or ebay)

It's just missing a tacho with shift light and neons for when it get's flooded 8)

Cheers, Glen.

Just a thought I dont know what sort of stereo head unit setup you may have but if the double din setup has been or is being removed you may be able to mount 3 standard 50/52mm vdo or other aftermarket gauges through a flat plate in the space below or above a single din stereo head unit

Not sure on those tricky do everything numbers, but will do some research. I could go for elec mirriors, so may follow, but the guages look tidy and are just what I'm after - you have replaced air vent on rhs with a guage?. cheers 4 the snaps. Not sure about din plugs, but have alpine head unit above uhf, so would have to look at installing infront of/below ashtray. Cheers guys, appreciate all the comments. Definitely want a tacho 4 when the sounds r cranked up a little.

Hi, I have fitted all these myself and is easy enough to do depending on what ones you are reffering too?
It's a dash out job to fit everything I have done but is easy to add anything else from now on with the way I have wired it all up.

Best advice I can give is use the ignition power from the little black fuse box on drivers side and once you have run one wire through firewall try piggy back it to use on all your guages where applicable etc.
Parkers illumination I have cut into the ash tray wire which gets used on a few things like ARB switches.
Earth/Ground wires I try piggy back as well. Needless to say I have that many wires running through drivers side firewall I have removed the entire grommet and had to drill an extra hole for boost vacuum line  Everything is kept neat in conduit and is appropriately fused. (8 fuse box added + in-line fuses where applicable)
The soldering iron has been used on occasions to melt plastic and elongate holes but looks neat.

For electric mirrors the switch loom is there but you will need to run your own wires from kick panel through to door and up and join/cut into electric mirror plug so a test light or volt gauge is required to find each wire. Highly recommended though, no more rattling pieces of junk! (NEVER BUY NON-GENUINE!)

The RHS VDO volt gauge is supported by dash surround using supplied bracket so the air vent is still there but almost rendered useless.

Cheers, Glen.

Rezpkt,

How do you intend to fit the Tiny-Tach? I rang them and they only have either 4 or 6mm transducers and the injection pipes on the 1HZ are somewhere in between. On the phone they told me that some of their customers had reamed/bored out the smaller transducer to fit with success. I'm not sure I want to gamble on this working unless I know first hand that someone has done it.

If you have any other ideas let me know.

Jason

Hi Glen,

i would like to get more information on the electric mirror install on the POV>

I picked up some wiring today off a rolled 40th anniversary but the mirrors were no good,
well one was broken and the other the wrong colour. I need black ones. What I did do was grab the factory wiring out of the doors for the mirrors as well as the switches. Will the factory plugs be in the 80 series kick panels either side?

I also picked up a instrument surround from the same vehicle so now I will also have a clock. Will the factory plug already be there behind the dash?

Cheers, Chris
