some of you might find this a bit dodgy, but it crossed my mind. Whats wrong with turning the fan into a purely mechanical fan rather than relying on the viscous hub?

Ie: Drill and bolt the fan through the viscous hub permanently to the shaft on the engine side so the fan is always spinning. the thermostat remains closed until the engine reaches operating temp so that wont make a difference and that way it will only cost $5 for 4 nyloc nuts and bolts instead of $500

any reasons not to do this?

I did this on our truck with a VT190 v8 cummins and it deffinatly robbs the power and boy did it ROAR.

also flogs the water pumps out in no time

Follow up to this;
Added a further 10mils yesterday (around 25mils total now) and my temps are now around 75-78 unless flogging its rings off. It is still hitting 85 up long hills but cooling a lot more quicker than before. I'm happy and will be leaving it like this.
Oil level is almost top level with those 4 holes.
Factory gauge is sitting a whisker below half at all times.

My previous fan clutch remained fully engaged and as said above, massive loss in power (especially with a mighty 1HZ) and was loud and outright annoying. Better than it not engaging at all and going into RED though!

For a 10 minute job I'm very happy with outcome.
Thermo fans (on/off switch) will remain mainly for off road purposes, hill climbs or after mud ingress to keep truck running nice and cool. There are no negative effects displayed to the viscous coupling and keep temps lower and stable for longer.

Thanks, Glen.

Hey all,

Well got my new fan clutch from toyota today, as well as a spare tube of silicon. I pulled it apart and the 1hdt one is basically exactly the same as the 1fz-fe clutch, adjusting screws etc. I added probably just over half a tube to the clutch, and that brought the oil level with the top of the 4 holes.

Now after double reading this post it appears everybody is only filling them up to the what would you say, level with the bottom of the top plate. so not quite level with the top of the holes).

I was wondering with me putting in a bit more then what has been said on here, can this damage the clutch by any means?
any thoughts would be great.

Cheers Troy.
