Hi Troy,

I have got no problem with Cash - the only issue is that I travel for work every week to different states around the country so logistically, it may be faster for you if you don't have to waiut for me to be back in Brissie at a time convenient to you...

Where as if I have them in stock when you order - I can have them sent by someone immediatly overnight....

Ahhh - that one!

I haven't been able to get a source for the correct diodes here in Australia - then I decided not to bother for three reasons.

1. It's a big job and the thought of pulling the instrument cluster looks like a PIA
2. The OEM Gauge - even modded, whilst it will move without the dead spot which would be a big plus still doesn't actualy tell you what the temp is...
3. The TM2 was a real easy install, gives the temp exactly and you can measure it from where ever you want and most importantly - has an ALARM if I forget to look at it

Agree with you on that!!!!!

Thanks for the link ShaneGTR, its good to know anyway, im going to get the TM-2 and a Electric Speco-meter gauge in the top of the radiator hose, the thermostat on my old turbo diesel 60 series opened at 82deg c and i had an aftermarket VDO guage, the hottest it ever got pulling a trailer through the soft sand with my foot right into it was 90deg c..................Loved that truck

Recieved my TM2 from Frank, great service, thanks!

All fitted and appears to be working all good, I changed all my coolant and heater hoses at the same time (what a PIA that was) and flushed and changed the coolant so see how we go with readings.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

Try this....

Get it up to operating temp, then put the air conditioner on flat out cold, put it in Drive with your foot on the brake at idle for 10 minutes.

If I do the above, it will climb to over 95 degree's...... and keep climbing if I don't take it out of gear or turn off the air conditioner.

Nope, finally tried this on Thursday during a hot day. AC on in drive, foot on brake the gauge slllooowwwly climbed to 86 and no more. Soon as I got moving it dropped to 79-82. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Alan.

Hi Chimpy,

Great news!

Did you change that PHH at the back of the motor? That's the one weak spot in our 80's when it comes to heater hoses... and that one is a REAL PIA :!:

Hi Alan,

I am curious to know if:

1. What model cruiser petrol/diesel and year?
2. Sit in Drive Stopped with foot on the pedal and air con turned on for 5 minutes or so after t is already in the 80's and see how it handles the temp - ie. what temps you get
3. Is there any other reason other than the temp that you think your fan clutch is a problem?

OK here goes,
1. it's a 1997 GXL 1FZ-FE on petrol/LPG with 230,000 ks
2. Slowly climbed to 86c and no further after at least 10 min. Dropped back to fluctuate between 79-82 while driving.
3. While in park with the fast idle knob holding the revs at about 2000 RPM the fan seems to slow down significantly as judged by the sound of the air and the quantity of air as felt on the hand held just behind the fan. Coupled with the fact that the temp then started to rise, (I lost my nerve when it got to over 90) and then returned to the eighties when the engine was let return to normal idle. The amount of (VERY) hot air blown on my hand also increased greatly.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Alan.

Hi Alan,

Was this while the car was running on petrol or LPG?

Was the bonnet open at the time ? This will reduce the temps significantly!

I will do the same with mine and just see what happens...

Hi Alan,

Hi Alan,

My car is Petrol only. So my figures are based on petrol - were the ones you gave on Petrol?

With my bonnet up, I got the 82 degree's when in park for 15 minutes with the air con turned on flat out.

If I raised the RPM to 2000 with the hand throttle - the temp did not move after 5 minutes.

With my Bonnet down I got 86 degrees when in park for 15 minutes with the aircon turned on flat out.

If I raised the RPM to 2000 with the hand throttle, it went up to 90 degrees C after 5 minutes and returned back down to 85-86 when I dropped the revs. The Air Flow however DID NOT drop - the fan was sucking a lot more air as the revs went up.... so maybe your Fan Clutch does have a problem.

The reason the temp goes up with the bonnet down is that the air can't get out from the engine bay - versus bonnet up the temp does not go up at all....

So what we really need to know is how are you judging th airflow drop? Is it that obvious? Were the tests you did with the bonnet up or down? and was it running on LPG or petrol?

LPG!! who would put that petrol muck through their engine??

Umm, up, a bit hard to put your hand behind the fan with it down I think. :D

I realize the bonnet up will assist cooling but the temps seem to be consistent either way.

Cheers,
Alan.

Hi Alan,

I guess you are then basing the drop in air flow at 2,000 REVS (which mine does not have) on the amount of air you can feel by hand, so if you are convinced that the fan is free wheeling when it is hot at higher Revs, which it is not supposed to do - then it is time for a new fan clutch or top up with FAN oil which Toyota sell...

I am not a mechanic though - so you may want to check with a professional before actualy doing anything and give them all the information including how your temps are going up etc. at 2000 revs with the bonnet open (which mine doesn't do either)

Good to see the fat bus 80's are mortal too :P

http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/view ... hp?t=14717

A blokes daughter on the surf forum fixed the issue for 60c, with parts that can be found in Australia.

Hopefully the ideas can help you guys out as well :D
